QLD State Titles - Kawana Waters, Sunshine Coast
7-8th March 2020
We were involved in 200m, 500m and 1km races - this year we had 24 club members attend - with our very own male paddler along this time, as we were not able to put in a mixed team, Tweed Heads kindly allowed our male member to join their team. Everyone who entered the 1km loved it and felt a sense of achievement from this race. 1km are a rolling start and are timed against the other competitors.
Splash of Pink Corporate and Social Regatta
9th October 2022
Get a team together from your work place, gym, or just a bunch of friends. The club supplies 2 experienced paddlers who become the strokes for the team, the teams get dressed up, a few practice sessions before the day so everyone knows what to do and the fun begins!! This year we had 8 teams competing. Great team building exercise and everyone had a great day! Many of our teams return each year, some are new to the sport of dragon boating and this is their first ever go at it.
NQ Intercity Regatta - Loam Island
5th June 2022
This yearly regatta sees teams compete, not only clubs from Townsville but Cairns and Mackay also travel to join in. Being far north we don't have the opportunities the clubs closer to capital cities have. It's great to see the clubs of NQ getting together. This year included not only Spitfires but also Dragons Abreast Townsville, NQ Phoenix, Blaze Dragons, Mackay Stingers, Dragons Abreast Mackay and Cairns Dragon Boat Club. Held at our new club site at Apex Park - fantastic venue!
Great Barrier Reef Masters Games - Cairns
25-26 May 2019
This event consisted of a race around Admiralty Island, which was 13km. A hard race but very rewarding to complete with a new personal best time for Spitfires. The following day consisted of 200m races. Cairns went to a lot of trouble for their evening social events. Firstly with an opening ceremony where the streets were closed and we held a parade. Each night was a different theme the opening night was dress in your team colours with a tropical twist, the second night saw us dressing as cops and robbers and finally our last night was 80's rock night theme. All social events were held at The Jack.
National Dragon Boat Regatta-AusChamps - Canberra
18-20 April 2019
The QLD Northern Regional team and Central team were selected after a fitness and Paddling test were completed. Once teams were selected, extra training outside normal club training was required to represent these regions at a State level. Teams included paddlers from 2 Townsville Clubs, Hervey Bay, 1770 and Cooloola.
A combined Townsville Dragon Boat Club and NQ Phoenix Dragon Boat Club combined to compete at the club level.
An exemption request for the 2 Townsville clubs to combine, due to the extenuating circumstances of the devastating floods in Townsville was put in and this was the decision:
Given the natural disaster which the City of Townsville recently occurred in January '18, AusDBF under special consideration approve both clubs to compete as one team at the 2019 AusChamps. AusDBF commends the determination of the both clubs in the face of adversity to still be willing to participate, this shows strength of character and determination.
